DIY CCTV Installation
Simple guide. Follow the steps and you will avoid the common mistakes.
Before you start (10 minutes)
- Write down how many cameras you want.
- Choose recorder place (loft, office, under stairs, near TV).
- Know your router place (for app/remote viewing).
- Decide recording time (2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks).
Need storage size? Use the hard drive calculator.
Step 1: Plan camera locations
- Front door (faces)
- Driveway / car
- Back door
- Side gate
Tip: Don’t put the camera too high. You want faces, not only heads.
Step 2: Choose system type (simple)
- IP / PoE: one cable to each camera (best).
- Analog HD: good if you already have cables.
Step 3: Run cables safely
- Plan the cable route first (loft is easiest).
- Keep cables away from water and sharp edges.
- Label cables (Camera 1, Camera 2…).
Step 4: Mount cameras
- Use good plugs/screws.
- Point camera away from direct lights.
- Leave a small service loop (a little extra cable).
Step 5: Set up recorder (DVR/NVR)
- Put recorder in a safe place (not easy to find).
- Make sure it has airflow (not inside a tight box).
- Connect to internet/router for phone app.
Step 6: Set recording
- Choose 24/7 or motion recording.
- Set the correct time/date.
- Test playback (yesterday + today).
Step 7: Test everything
- Night test (lights off)
- Phone app remote test
- Make sure all cameras record
